Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Third Affiliated Hospital is a Tertiary A-Level hospital integrating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with Western medicine. It provides comprehensive healthcare services encompassing medical treatment, education, research, disease prevention, health maintenance and rehabilitation. As a key institution under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education and serves as the third clinical medical college of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Located in the Beijing Asian Sports Village and the Olympic core area, the hospital offers views of the Olympic Park and the National Stadium, with the Beijing Dadu City Wall Relics Park bordering its southern side. Founded in October 1964, the institution was previously known as Beijing Urban Construction Hospital and Beijing Metallurgical Hospital before being officially designated as Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Third Affiliated Hospital in September 2006.
The hospital is equipped with 520 beds and a full range of medical facilities, including 34 clinical departments, five medical technology departments, a community health service center with three service stations, a health management center, an outpatient department and a specialized center for sports injury rehabilitation
The hospital has a senior medical team including 32 senior experts, 70 associate professors, 65 doctoral degree holders and 108 master’s degree holders. The hospital is particularly renowned for its expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of encephalopathy, bone diseases, oncology, nephrology, digestive disorders, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, endocrine disorders, dermatology and gynecology, using an integrative approach that combines Chinese and Western medicine. It has achieved advanced clinical outcomes in the treatment of these major diseases, and each year it receives patients and visiting scholars from more than 30 countries and regions.
The hospital maintains three national-level TCM clinical specialties: Integrative Encephalopathy, Integrative Orthopedics and Digestive Diseases. It also features six key specialties designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including encephalopathy, orthopedics, oncology, cardiovascular diseases, digestive disorders and nursing. In addition, it supports four major disciplines under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine — TCM General Medicine, TCM Orthopedics, TCM Psychosomatic Medicine, and TCM Breast Diseases — alon with two key specialties recognized by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine: TCM Gynecology and Rehabilitation.
The institution employs 12 doctoral supervisors, 46 master’s supervisors and several national and municipal senior TCM experts serving as academic mentors. It functions as a standardized training base for resident physicians and general practitioners in Chinese medicine. Notably, it was China's first institution to recruit graduate students in TCM general practice, providing inheritance education , clinical training, and academic mentorship for both undergraduate and graduate students under the guidance of doctoral and master’s supervisors.
In recent years, the hospital has undertaken 13 major projects, including international collaborations, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Projects, Beijing Natural Science Foundation projects and doctoral research programs supported by the Ministry of Education. It has also participated in 17 provincial-level projects, such as those funded by the Capital Medical Development Research Fund, as well as 169 research projects at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The hospital has been honored with the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, along with numerous provincial research awards.
